What is brown noise?

Brown noise is random sound with most of its energy in the low frequencies: its power drops by 6 dB every octave. The result is a deep, even rumble with no hiss, like a distant waterfall or steady rain on a roof. It takes its name from Brownian motion, not the colour. More on how it works →

Frequently asked questions

What is brown noise?

Brown noise is random sound whose energy falls by 6 decibels with every octave, so it is concentrated in the low frequencies. It sounds like a deep, steady rumble — closer to a distant waterfall or heavy rain on a roof than to TV static. It is also called red or Brownian noise.

Is this brown noise really free?

Yes. The player on this page is free, has no ads, needs no account and sets no cookies. The sound is generated in your browser, so nothing is streamed or downloaded either.

Does this brown noise loop?

No. There is no recording to loop. Every sample is calculated live from random numbers, the same way the Brown Noise Player iPhone app does it, so the sound never repeats and has no seam to notice at 3 a.m.

Can I leave brown noise playing all night?

In this browser tab, yes — keep the tab open and the device awake. Phones usually pause web audio when the screen locks, which is why the iPhone app exists: it keeps playing with the screen off. Keep the volume low for long sessions.

How loud should brown noise be?

Only as loud as it takes to cover the sounds bothering you — for most rooms that is about the level of a quiet conversation or below. For sleep, set it lower than feels necessary while you are awake and put the speaker across the room rather than by your head.

What is the difference between the five sounds?

Classic: balanced, steady brown noise. Deep: darker and heavier, like distant thunder. Warm: softer top end, gentle and close. Ocean: slow rolling swells, like surf. Rainfall: brighter and airier, a steady downpour. All five are level-matched, so switching between them does not change the loudness.

Is brown noise better than white noise?

Neither is better in general. Brown noise has more bass and no hiss, which many people find easier to listen to for hours. White noise has more high-frequency energy, which covers sharp, high sounds more effectively. See brown vs white vs pink noise.
